Fields

The Fields rug is inspired by ‘disruptive camouflage’ (also known as ‘Razzle Dazzle’ in the US), this is a camouflage technique invented at the end of the First World War by artist Norman Wilkinson to protect a warship from enemy fire by preventing an adversary from precisely estimating its position and direction. This method relies on a complex motif formed from a jumble of irregular lines and contrasting colours breaking the silhouette of the ship by means of an optical illusion. This camouflage became obsolete with the advent of radar during the Second World War, however, the principle is still sometimes encountered, mostly in an artistic context as is the case with the Fields rug. Here one can also see the stylized representation of the division of agricultural fields as one might see them from the sky, from the window of an aeroplane.
